Black Memories Matter

untold  stories  of black  lives  in  cumbria
A collaborative project between M-Unit, Tullie House Museum and Carlisle Library and Archives to address the lack of diversity within Cumbria's collections.

Cumbria's collections don’t accurately represent the level of cultural diversity we see today and we want to help change this. Our first step is the launch of a new, active collections campaign, which focuses on collecting stories, objects and memories belonging to people with black heritage in Cumbria.

What kinds of things would we like?

  • Anything you would like to share with us and future generations
  • Objects and photographs belonging to and featuring people who live or work in Cumbria

We understand people may not wish to part with precious items, so we can accept high quality scans of images or video files.

  • Stories and experiences of living in Cumbria – Tullie House and Carlisle Archives can offer support to record new stories in a safe way
  • Photographs from the Black Lives Matter gathering in Carlisle in 2020
  • Newspaper articles
  • Writing and artwork
