M-Unit started out as a youth group back in 2003... where has the time gone?! We set out to create a space for children and young people of colour to share, celebrate and talk about their cultural heritage.
Over the years, Carlisle has become increasingly diverse which is extremely exciting to see! However, chances are that if you're a person of colour in Carlisle you will still be in the minority... and you will feel it. We'd love to be part of a movement which supports young people of colour in Carlisle today to own their colour, their culture and their heritage. This project aims to help young people of colour to feel confident in expressing who they are to those around them. Our hope is that the young people who chose to be part of this project will help shape future projects as well as future generations. We believe mentors and role models are essential in life. We also believe that young people can make a huge difference to each other's lives. We will therefore be supporting the young people in becoming mentors for those who are younger than themselves. They will explore themes around identity and belonging and share lived experiences with other young people in Carlisle. They'll work with artists, gain skills in leadership, have the opportunity to work towards the Arts Award and hopefully have a lot of fun and make new friends. |
We'd love to be part of a movement which supports young people of colour in carlisle to own their colour, their culture and their heritage.
